IGNOU is a Central University established by an Act of Parliament in 1985. IGNOU Degrees/Diplomas/Certificates are recognised by all the members of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and are at par with Degrees/Diplomas/Certificates of all Indian Universities/Deemed Universities/Institutions as per UGC.

There are several departments (called 'schools') which offer ignou courses in their respective field. For example: School of Computer and Information Sciences runs popular BCA, MCA and CIC courses, whereas School of Management Studies runs MBA, PGDIM, B. Com. and M. Com.
